The new enemy within: Smart phones are now sophisticated surveillance devices, making them ideal for intelligence gathering.

In the hands of a criminal, the modern smart phone can become the enemy within.

Since smart phone manufacturers must continually satisfy increasing consumer expectations, they’re driven to introduce smaller and more sophisticated devices, just to stay in business.

When we purchase a smart phone today, we take for granted that it will be a sophisticated and sleek device capable of storing images, capturing video, running applications, and enabling Internet browsing.

We also expect high-speed data access, along with a high mega pixel camera that can transmit photos and stream live video over the Internet.

Smart Phone Video

To make matters worse, smart phones are easy to conceal, allowing criminals or their internal accomplices to send photos and stream live video/audio outside of a facility without the knowledge or control of those in charge of it.

The danger has become so pronounced that the city of Rio De Janeiro in Brazil recently passed a law that bans the use of cell phones and radio transmitters in city banks. The ban is an attempt to reduce the number of robberies, known locally as “saidinha de banco” (exiting the bank), where a thief within the bank communicates with an accomplice outside to rob a customer when the customer exits the bank.

Cell phones in US Courts In the USA some courtroom Judges are also banning the use of cell phones in their courtrooms to prevent witnesses and juries from being photographed and videoed during criminal trials. The use of the smart phones in courts has led to harassment and intimidation, including posting of the material on social media sites. Such a ban would help protect witnesses and juries from these abuses.

These are just a few everyday examples. The ways smart phones can be used for intelligence gathering seems endless. Given the magnitude of the risks posed by their illicit use, the need for advanced smart phone detection has never been more urgent. The security and intellectual property of every organization is at risk.
